Hugo Blanco was one of the main organizers of the 1958-64 peasant movement in Peru. Sentenced to 25 years in prison, he was freed in 1970 after an international campaign. He participated in reorganizing the Confederación Campesina del Perú (CCP) and in founding the Partido Unificado Mariateguista, and was elected to the Peruvian Congress and Senate. Currently he is a representative of the CCP in the department of Cuzco. He is the author of Land or Death: The Peasant Struggle in Peru (1972) and Nosotros los Indios (2003). hugucha@yahoo.com

José De Echave, an economist, is Director of the program on Mining and Communities at the NGO CooperAcción and editor of the newsletter Actualidad Minera del Perú. Adolfo Gilly is a professor of history at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. Born in Argentina, he has been a Mexican national since 1982. While a political prisoner (1966-72), he wrote The Mexican Revolution (New Press, 2005). He has been a visiting professor at numerous US universities. Pablo González Casanova is Professor of Historical Sciences at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, the Escuela Nacional de Antropología e Historia, and the Colegio de México. He has been a visiting professor at Cambridge University, Oxford University, and New School University. Gerardo Rénique is Associate Professor of History at the City University of New York and is on the board of directors of the Brecht Forum. He is co-author (with Deborah Poole) of Peru: Time of Fear (1992) and “Terror and the Privatized State: A Peruvian Parable” (Radical History Review, Winter 2003). He also contributed a chapter to Race and Nation in Modern Latin America (2003). g.renique@att.net   Peter Winn spent much of the Allende era in Chile as a journalist and historian. He is the author of Weavers of Revolution: The Yarur Workers and Chile’s Road to Socialism (1986) and most recently editor of Victims of the Chilean Miracle: Workers and Neoliberalism in the Pinochet Era, 1973-2002 (2004). He is a professor and researcher at the Popular Education Center of the Multiversidad Franciscana de América Latina.
